Australian cup and spoon converter
An Australian tablespoon is 20 mL. Almost everywhere else it is 15 mL, and a recipe written overseas means the smaller one. On oil, the most energy dense thing in most recipes, following an overseas tablespoon with an Australian spoon is a third more than the recipe intended.
The cup is 250 mL here, against 240 mL in the United States, which matters less per cup and adds up across a batch. Platify converts every recipe quantity through the Australian values, so a recipe written for an Australian kitchen measures correctly in one.
- Australian volume
- 20.0 mL
- One Australian measure
- 20 mL
These are volumes, not weights. Converting a volume to grams needs the density of the specific food, which is a separate step and is why a cup of flour and a cup of honey are not the same weight.
Where these numbers come from
Standards Australia AS 1325, the metric cup and spoon set: cup 250 mL, tablespoon 20 mL, dessertspoon 10 mL, teaspoon 5 mL. A measurement standard rather than a nutrition guideline.
